Buying a Car in Lithuania — Registration and Leasing Guide

In Lithuania, both Lithuanian and foreign natural or legal persons can purchase a car or other vehicle. A vehicle can be registered in Lithuania by persons residing in Lithuania as well as by companies, institutions, and organizations registered in Lithuania.

A foreigner wishing to register a car in Lithuania must obtain a residence permit. A car can also be purchased and registered in Lithuania in the name of a Lithuanian company owned by a foreigner. The most common forms of legal entities in Lithuania are sole proprietorship (IĮ) or limited liability company (UAB), but other legal forms also exist.

A Lithuanian legal entity wishing to purchase a car may apply for financing from a Lithuanian leasing company. The leasing loan term varies depending on the vehicle value — usually up to 6 years. The down payment is 10, 20 or 30% of the total car price. The annual interest rate is up to 10%. The car must be insured and equipped with an alarm system; the insurance is paid by the purchasing company.

A car or other vehicle in Lithuania is registered at any branch of VĮ “Regitra” — the vehicle owner’s place of residence or registered address in Lithuania does not matter. Upon completion of registration, VĮ “Regitra” issues the original vehicle registration documents and a state registration plate.
