Learn the Lithuanian Language — Courses for Foreigners
Vilnius is a multilingual European city that unites people of various nationalities. One of the biggest problems faced by people who arrive to live in Lithuania is the language barrier. Knowing Lithuanian is especially important if a person plans to stay in the country for a longer period.
The intensity of Lithuanian language training is divided into: regular-intensity, intensive, and individual classes. Lithuanian language courses are organized for groups as well as for individual study.
Lithuanian language basics (A1 level) courses — also known as beginner courses. During such courses, learners are taught to communicate in everyday situations (how to answer, ask, narrate); listen to and understand phrases, information, data and stories used in communication; read texts; write short texts and fill out forms requiring personal information. In this way the learner becomes familiar with information that will be relevant in the future and can reinforce knowledge by completing assigned tasks.
Remote courses — currently one of the most popular ways to learn Lithuanian. Most often lessons are conducted remotely via the “Skype” program. These courses can be used by people living abroad. Teachers create an individual program and method for each learner. The duration of the course is agreed with the learner. Video-conference lessons are held during which speaking, grammar, and text comprehension are taught. Tasks are also performed, current topics are discussed, and the learner’s speaking foundations are improved. Such courses differ from regular courses only in that the learner can study from any place that is convenient, and the courses are adapted to the individual’s needs.
The European Integration Fund organizes projects that aim to teach not only the Lithuanian language but also to acquaint individuals with the country’s history, culture, values and traditions. Such projects help solve the language problem while also expanding knowledge about the country. The projects are very useful for third-country nationals and, in addition, are free of charge.
Pronunciation courses — these are courses organized for people who wish to improve their speech and pronunciation. For most people this is a problem because getting rid of one’s native-language accent is very difficult. Such courses help to speak clearly and without an accent (or reduce it).
There are courses that prepare foreigners for the Lithuanian language exam. Upon completion, a certificate is issued confirming this fact.
Some Lithuanian universities organize courses for foreigners and non-Lithuanian speakers living in the country.
Lithuanian language courses are organized not only for adults but also for the children of foreigners. Children are taught the basics of the Lithuanian language, and efforts are made to make it more interesting to attract the children’s attention. This is done through games, fairy tales, songs and animated cartoons. Books and workbooks are used. Children can reinforce knowledge not only through tasks but also by communicating with their peers.
